How to Get More Instagram Followers
Nine months ago I didn’t know I had any Instagram followers. My teen daughter had to explain it to me, while snickering.
I thought Instagram was just a filter app like Hipstagram. Hipstagram looked like an old fashioned Polaroid and gave my photos a groovy 70′s look. You know, overexposed and sort of brown.
Now I am a self declared “Instagram Expert” and crossed the 1,000 follower mark today.
This is how I did it:
Post intriguing photos
This should really be obvious but I’ve seen enough poorly lit pictures of the outsides of ugly hotels to know that not everyone does this.
Did you know you can take photos with a camera other than your iPhone or Droid and then get them on Instagram? This is how surfers get awesome pics like this.
Use your best camera, or your GoPro, get the awesome shot, move it to your photo album on your mobile device, upload it from there. Even though Instagram is now web based, you can’t upload photos from your computer. Have you checked out your Instagram page? It’s Instagram.com/yourigname
Look with an Instagram Eye
There’s a joke that you “turn your phone sideways and it’s art.” While you can make anything look cooler by cropping it or adding the right filter, you need good material to work with. You don’t need to be on a tropical island to get a great Instagram shot, but it doesn’t hurt.
On an early morning beach walk I saw this gorgeous piece of driftwood, I took the photo from three different angles to see which was most intriguing.
Figure out what your followers like
My followers seem to like pictures of my lifestyle. Sometimes I feel like I’m being over the top when I post something like this -
And then my Instagram lights up with likes and I think, ok, that’s what they want to see and I try to post more like that. The same goes for the shots I put up that just get crickets. I really thought my huge alligator shot was good, I guess Gator Boys have stolen my thunder.
Comment on photos taken by Instagrammers like you
Liking their shots is not enough, no one sees your Instagram name. I commented on a picture that Marie-Chantal posted of her and India Hicks saying something like “of course my two favorite style icons would be friends”. I picked up ten new followers off that comment, not bloggers, all private accounts who follow those two.
