Today’s Fashion Friday is all about the shorts. It’s that time of year when we haul our pasty legs out for the world to see. Hate your legs? Wear shorts anyway, I’ll never forget reading a quote from an older woman, “If I’d realized how hot I looked at 40 versus what I thought I looked like, I’d have walked around naked.” You might think I’m crazy, but wearing heels with shorts makes your legs look longer, fitter and sexier. You just have to make sure you’re not wearing stilettos, or you’re telling another story entirely.
From Top to Bottom:
The hair. I cut a good 12 inches off my hair recently, what used to take me hours to style now takes me minutes. Instead of feeling older with short hair, I actually feel younger, and a little more bad ass. What I love about this style is that it can be a complete wreck, and still look good. The day we shot these photos I sweated it out two hours on trains and subways to get to Brooklyn where it was hella windy. I had no time to fix my hair, we whipped from location to location, I didn’t even get to look in a mirror. If you live in the tri-state area, you’re welcome to my stylist, she also does Tom Bergeron and Chevy Chase. Melanie at Color Cafe in Greenwich, CT.
I picked up this Rebecca Taylor on sale about a month ago. I love that it feels a little Chanel, a little edgy. The detail is beaded and it’s well constructed, I think this is something I can wear for at least another five years. I found it on sale HERE for $259. I’m wearing a 4. Rebecca Taylor makes a lot of similar jackets that can all work with shorts or jeans, they are that perfect mix of business, but not really. I would also wear it with jeans and a t-shirt.
The Shirt and Shorts:
The shorts are several years old. I spend a lot of money on good shorts and then they last. It’s not easy to find structured shorts that fit. The key with dressing up shorts, is well, wearing good shorts. These are Theory. The tank is just a simple silky top, it could be worn casually at the beach, or under a jacket for a meeting.
I styled the outfit with heels and with flats. I liked the heels better. These are an old pair from my closet. The key to wearing shorts with heels is choosing a wedge or a casual heel, never pumps, never stilettos, and even a strappy sandal can look a little too – well – side piece (I learned that one from my teens).
This bag is my travel favorite, it’s a cross body wallet. You don’t have to spend up for Chanel for this look. Any small crossover works. I use it as a wallet inside my carryon and and then have a small purse for travel.
